Leaning Into the Light: How to Think Differently About the Time Change This Year

Do you struggle with the time change? Me too. I hear you. And yet, I don’t want to get pulled into the negativity that often surrounds it. I’ve been there in the past, and one thing I’ve learned is this: resisting and rehearsing how much I dislike something does nothing to change it.

Like so many things in life, there are circumstances we simply don’t have the power to control — but we can choose the attitude we bring to them. So, this year, I’m trying something different:

What I’m Choosing This Time Around

• Give myself grace and tenderness.

I’m accepting that I’m one of many who struggles to regain a rhythm after the time change — and that’s okay. I’ll be patient with myself as my body and mind adjust.

• Stop reminding myself how much I dislike it.

No more repeating, “It’s really this o’clock… I hate this change.” I’m planning to gently redirect those thoughts, knowing I won’t be perfect at it — and that’s okay too.

• Listen to my body instead focusing on the clock.

When I’m hungry, I’ll eat. When I’m tired, I’ll rest (as schedules allow). This one is hard for me — I’m such a creature of habit. If you have tips, I’d love to hear them.

• Focus on the positives.

More light. The newness of spring. The small lift that comes with brighter evenings.

• Notice the beauty of each sunrise.

One sunrise at a time — letting each one be a gentle reset.

These may seem like small shifts, things I “should have” done years ago. But the truth is, we humans often repeat old patterns long after they stop serving us. Awareness is the first step toward change.

I’d Love to Hear From You
