A Cold Morning… Choosing Warm Memories

Writing from the state of South Dakota — where the feels like temperature is sitting at –21 degrees — I’m reminded how much it matters where I place my thoughts. Rather than joining the chorus of complaints about the cold, I’m choosing to lean into warm memories from years past. It’s amazing how quickly that simple shift softens my attitude and opens my heart.
My morning started the same way it usually does: a warm cup of my favorite coffee, my devotional books, prayer, and a grateful list. And today, that list felt especially meaningful.
Today’s Gratitude List
My family and the blessing of our children and grandchildren
A working furnace faithfully keeping our home warm
Employment for both my spouse and me, allowing us to pay that heat bill
A year of change — loss, health concerns, job transitions — that has ultimately strengthened us as a couple
My sweet 40‑lb dog, Finn, and the groomer who made him look extra cute yesterday
A locket from my spouse that brings smiles to the people I care for at work
That locket made me pause. It wasn’t expensive, but it carries a message that means the world to me. Inside are the words “You Are My Sunshine.” It’s a reminder that my spouse does love me — sparkly morning personality and all. I know my silly songs may not always be appreciated in the moment, but deep down, I like to think they’d be missed.
I’ve also noticed that men often carry meaningful things in their pockets too — a smooth stone, a tiny cross, a token from someone they love. Small reminders that they’re not alone.
So today, I’m reflecting on this simple question:
What’s in your locket or your pocket — and what story does it tell?
Pause today and ask God to bring to mind the small gifts He’s tucked into your life. If you feel comfortable, share one in the comments — your gratitude may spark someone else’s.
Let that memory warm your heart on this bitterly cold winter day. And if you’re somewhere warm, may it warm your heart just the same.
With grace and gratitude,
Cindy
