How to Love Others Well

Food May Be a Love Language
Food May Be a Love Language

It's February, and with it comes the topic of love, pink hearts, chocolates, flowers, and love gifting galore! These thoughtful gifts, cards, treats, and other frivolities are wonderful. But are they the most impactful for the receiver?

Here's a thought! This Valentine month, consider finding out from those you love what they most appreciate. Do they value gifts, flowers, and such (which are all wonderful things), or is the gift of your time, listening ear, or helping hand the way they like to receive love? Often, we want to love others in ways that WE like to be loved, assuming that is what others want. What if we give love to another in their language and the way they desire to receive love? What a true GIFT that would be.

We all like to be remembered, so let's be mindful of how we can help others feel the love! Take note of their preferences so the focus isn't on you and how you like to give, but on them and how they like to receive.

Some different ideas are:

  • Give someone an old-fashioned phone call.

  • Consider dropping a card in the mail. Due to technology, it feels like a lost art.

  • Make them a homemade favorite dish or dessert and deliver it to their home.

  • Instead of guessing at their favorite flowers, candy or otherwise, find out from someone else close to them what those favorites are and be intentional about selecting them.

  • Invite someone out to lunch or a coffee date.

  • Think of an experience you could give them that they would enjoy. Remember you may need to do some homework to figure out an experience they would like.

Give it a try and report back on any good outcomes!

XOXOXO
