How Starting Your Day with a Psalm Can Turn It Around

There are many days in our lives when we may wake up in a suffering state. Our minds may be filled with anxious thoughts about the day ahead or regrets about how we lived, responded, or behaved the day before. We may find ourselves ruminating on a mistake or fearful of its consequences. Our minds spin...
If we allow those feelings to spin unchecked, they can overtake the entire day and rob us of the blessings right in front of us. What, then, are some steps we can take to accept those feelings without becoming captive to an uneasy state—one that holds us back from loving others and being our best selves?
A helpful method shared with me at a recent event was to first acknowledge the feelings. It may sound a little funny, but even saying, “Hello fear or anxiety, my old friends. I see and feel you are here. I know you once protected me in some way, but you no longer serve me. So depart from me.” Then, take a few deep breaths and call upon God and His Word to replace the feelings with the power of peace—peace that only He can bring. The peace that surpasses all understanding.
Just this morning, I came across a Psalm that helped me in my own battle with ruminating thoughts that tend to attack early in the day. Psalm 61:2 reads: “From the end of the earth I will cry to You, When my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”
The Lord is our God, and we are His people. He will ALWAYS care for us. Don't allow fear and anxiety to rule your day—ask for His help in this quest.
If you struggle with fear, anxiety, or overwhelm—you are not alone! I've been there, and I have discovered many ways to manage these feelings through scripture and practical strategies.
