How Can I Be an Encourager?

I was reminded this morning of what a gift it is to be blessed with opportunities to encourage others. Each of us has different gifts, talents, and abilities. We may not always recognize how we can bless others, but we often notice when others bless us!
Here are a few simple ways to encourage and bless someone today. Make it your goal to uplift at least one person you encounter—whether you know them personally or not. Pay attention and look for someone who needs kind words or a thoughtful act of care.
Listen without fixing. When someone shares a struggle, resist the urge to give advice or solve their problem. Instead, validate their feelings with gentle words like, “This is hard,” or “I’m sad you’re dealing with this.” You might even ask, “How can I support you in this?”
Affirm their strengths. Be genuine. Say, “Wow, you are really gifted at ___—what a blessing that is.” Simple words of affirmation can remind someone of their God-given abilities.
Offer respectful help. If you see someone struggling physically, don’t assume they want assistance. Ask first: “Would it be okay if I opened the door for you?” or “Would you like me to carry that package?” This honors their dignity and gives them the choice.
Reach out unexpectedly. Send a thoughtful text, invite someone to lunch, or call just to say you’re thinking of them. Small gestures can brighten someone’s day more than you realize.
Share a memory. Recall a fond moment with someone you haven’t spoken to in a while and wish them a happy day. Reminding them of shared joy can rekindle connection.
Encouragement doesn’t have to be grand or complicated—it’s often found in the smallest acts of kindness. Scripture reminds us, “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing” (1 Thessalonians 5:11).
Today, be intentional. Ask the Lord to open your eyes to someone who needs a word of hope, a listening ear, or a gentle reminder that they are seen and loved. You may never know the full impact of your encouragement, but God does—and He delights in using you to bless others.
With grace and gratitude,
Cindy
